Bellatrix for violin solo
Jeffrey Ryan (2001)
My journey with Jeffrey Ryan’s Bellatrix began in 2017. The score had been sitting on my shelf for years, moving with me from Montréal to San Francisco. I was applying for the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank Competition and the rules stipulated that each applicant perform a Canadian work. Up to that point I had avoided the piece as it requires the performer to sing, hum and vocalize - something I was completely uncomfortable with. And yet, for some reason, I decided to dive into the work. I quickly discovered that, in addition to its striking virtuosity and emotional breadth, Bellatrix offers the performer the opportunity to present themselves in a truly individual, honest and vulnerable way.
I credit the power of Bellatrix, and the confidence it gave me, with the success I had at the Musical Instrument Bank Competition, and for the opportunity to perform and record on the “Taft” Stradivari violin for four years. The piece was also the seed of this entire recording project. I wanted to commission more pieces through which I could discover and present my artistic voice as honestly and openly as possible. The result is the CD you have in front of you. -CW
