about

DESCRIBE YOURSELF for violin, voice and Zoom (video communication platform)
Leslie Ting (2022)

Describe Yourself is a piece based on the practice of self-audio description.

Audio description is a spoken commentary of the visual information needed to understand the content of a performance, film or gallery exhibit. It enables a blind or visually impaired person to experience and enjoy a performance on an equal basis as a sighted person by providing information that is not made clear by dialogue or sound.

Self-audio description is when a person describes themselves for the benefit of a blind or visually impaired person, again, to provide information a sighted person would have.

The performance of the piece is meant to occur over Zoom by two performers - a violinist and vocalist. The piece incorporates the sound processing of the Zoom platform which prioritizes the voice over background noise. It also makes use of Zoom’s “self-view” feature, a function that allows meeting participants to observe themselves over the course of their Zoom interaction.

The score consists of a series of instructions. The piece begins with the violinist performing specific musical material meant to interact with Zoom’s sound processing algorithm. The vocalist, using Zoom’s “self-view”, simultaneously answers a series of questions related to their physical appearance.

The recording featured on this album is one specific iteration of this work. It also exists as a video piece, recorded over Zoom in the winter of 2022.
