Six Tableaus for Violin

This suite was constructed in a cyclical process. It began as a short improvised piece on the violin. The recording of the improvisation was then used as the source material for an electronic piece in which it was played back using an algorithm. This algorithm had an input variable that would dictate how the source material was played back. What we inputted was Chris performing his next improvisation. This would happen in real time so that he could hear and manipulate the playback of the source material with his performance – basing his musical choices not only on their sound, but also the effect they had on the piece the algorithm was generating. This second improvisation would then be used as the source material for a second electronic piece, which would require yet another improvisation to manipulate its playback. These steps were repeated in a continuum to create dozens of short electronic pieces. The suite comprises six of these pieces that demonstrate the dynamic results of the process. We chose to refer to them as "tableaus" because each one represents an isolated moment in a longer musical narrative. On top of that, they all have a quality of stillness, which we love.
