Dissolver begins in ordered chaos, descends into dirge, builds and rises to complete chaos and is released into groove! I began writing the piece on an acoustic guitar while hearing a big band in my head.
I tried to imagine the sounds of the individual soloists as I wanted to create a space for them to shine as improvisors, which they do!
Dave Robbins - drums
Andre Lachance - bass
Ron Samworth - guitar
Jillian Lebeck - piano
Jon Bentley - soprano, alto, tenor saxophones
Mark Ferris - violin
Vince Mai - trumpets
Jim Hopson - trombones, bass trombone, tuba
Mixed by Chris Gestrin
This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat
Improvised in a single stunning take, the compositions on “Symphony No 1: Winter” are hypnotic and enveloping sheets of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 9, 2023
