First thing I wrote after the pandemic. I was hearing vast multifarious layers of rhythms, at first working together, then disintegrating into semi-chaos, resolving at 2:42. Then our tuba and bari sax give us for a long grounding melody. At 3:40 we get a variation of opening theme until the end. Kudos to the world-class drumming by Trent Otter and Kai Basanta.
Trent Otter - drums
Kai Basanta - drums
Tom Keenlyside - baritone sax
Jon Bentley - tenor saxophone
John Korsrud - trumpet/ organ
Jim Hopson - trombones, bass trombone, tuba

This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat
Improvised in a single stunning take, the compositions on “Symphony No 1: Winter” are hypnotic and enveloping sheets of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 9, 2023
