Sonata Tristan and Isolde
I composed this work in honour of my mother's 70th birthday. While she had stopped playing the viola when she began to raise her family, she still loved viola music deeply, and always enjoyed listening to both the viola classics and the pieces I had begun to write for the instrument. The title comes from the fact that, at this time of her life, my mother had a collie named Tristan and a cat named Isolde. The three of them, all happy together, inspired the piece, which, given its short duration, is really more a sonatina.
