Source Code - Harry Stafylakis (2019/ 2021)
This piece is perhaps one of my most explicit attempts at writing contemporary progressive metal music for a non-metal ensemble. The musical language of metal is, in a real sense, the source code behind my artistic persona, and here is presented in relatively pure form – a sure sign that I’m long past caring about academia’s allergy to music with tunes and grooves.
Eliot Doyle - drums
Andre Lachance - bass
Harry Stafylakis - guitar, piano
Mark Ferris - violin
Tom Keenlyside - soprano, alto, tenor, baritone saxophones
Mike Herriott - trumpets
Jim Hopson - trombones, bass trombone
Mixed by Adam Pietrykowski
This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat
Improvised in a single stunning take, the compositions on “Symphony No 1: Winter” are hypnotic and enveloping sheets of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 9, 2023
