a bilateral, a symmetry - James O’Callaghan (2021)
A bilateral, a symmetry was created by manipulating recordings of improvisations and notated fragments by 8 of Vancouver’s most daring musicians. Prompted by Hard Rubber Director John Korsrud’s invitation to create something “totally free,” and in admiration of the polyvalence of the musicians, I drew on my diverse practices in electroacoustic music, contemporary classical composition, and electronic dance music, to create a piece intuitively and expressively, drawing on genre freely.
Tim Proznick - drums
Kerry Galloway - drums
Vivian Houle - voice
Ron Samworth - guitar
Mark Ferris - violin
Tom Keenlyside - flute and saxophones
Mike Herriott - trumpets
Jim Hopson - trombone
Mixed by James O’Callaghan
This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat
Improvised in a single stunning take, the compositions on “Symphony No 1: Winter” are hypnotic and enveloping sheets of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 9, 2023
