Don’t Throw Your Head in Your Hands for violin and karaoke tapes
Nicole Lizée (2020)
I started collecting old karaoke tapes in the early 2000s. I was drawn to the sounds that came to the forefront after the primary identifiers for the song - the lead melody and lyrics - were removed. If certain songs weren’t available I would make my own. I used an old Tascam 4-track to manipulate the karaoke tapes; wearing down and erasing parts of the song, bending the pitch, cutting/splicing, creating hiss, hum, and other artifacts.
I’m drawn to placing ‘things’ (sounds, machines, aesthetics, iconography) in environments that aren’t their natural habitat. Furthermore, if these sounds, devices, or ideas are considered obsolete or forgotten it makes them more ominous. They are ghosts. They initially belonged somewhere, but were abandoned or replaced, and now they are recontextualized in a concert music environment.
