about

Many composers have not a person but a place, environment, in mind. Music becomes something to visit. An environment to go through…
- John Cage

Etudes Boreales (1978)
Once considered unplayable, American composer John Cage composed these etudes incorporating both chance operations and the Atlas Boreales, an atlas or star chart of the northern sky. Of his etude collections, which feature extreme fingerboard navigation, complex aggregates, absence of barlines or traditional note values, and sounds produced by fingernails, wood of the bow and mostly without use of vibrato, he said, "I'm interested in the use of intelligence and the solution of impossible problems.…performance would show that the impossible is not impossible."

John Cage wishes to fertilize the barren land of music. He faces the task with the humble soul of a farmer. To cultivate the land of music, aren't human hands and feet still suitable? We are trying to get a large harvest from that inherited land of music without evaluating the soil. Without cultivating sound, no real originality will grow.
