about

In Bruniquel Cave for multi-tracked violin
Fjóla Evans (2022)

In 1989, deep inside of Bruniquel Cave in France, archaeologists found a mysterious assemblage: a collection of broken stalagmites arranged into ringlike structures and piles. Scientists estimate the collection originated around 176,000 years ago, a time when Neanderthals were the only possible creatures in the area who could have built the circles. The archaeologists were puzzled as to the purpose of these clusters of stalagmites: the cave is too deep inside the mountain to have been used as a dwelling, and they found no leftover evidence of food or other remnants of daily life to indicate the Neanderthals spent any significant amount of time there. These circles must have been created for a more mysterious purpose, perhaps as part of some kind of ritual, or maybe these archaeologists discovered the first evidence of Neanderthal art-making deep inside the cave. When writing the piece In Bruniquel Cave, I wanted to evoke these mysterious assemblages. Perhaps the ritual of the piece is in its circularity, or maybe it appears in the weight of Chris’s bow arm, as he suspends it to create the most quiet violin textures. In any case, I imagine being deep inside a cave, inside a stalagmite circle, listening to the magnified grain of the violin.
