about

Music for Magpies (2003)
pied butcherbird
hoopoe lark
ringed river snike
pileated pocket grouse
green-rumped antstalker
(originally for viola da gamba with quarter-tone frets)

Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Emily Doolittle is an Athenaeum Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and studies zoomusicology, the music-like aspects of animal songs. She writes: “Magpies are known not for their song (which can only be described as raucous, at best), but for their tendency towards mischief, and their cunning thievery of shiny, attractive objects. In this spirit, I thought I would collect an array of shiny, attractive songs, stolen from other birds. I am indebted to the many wonderful recordings of birds available, most especially those of Jean C. Roché (particularly the Beauty of Bird Song, on which can be heard stunning examples of the pied butcherbird and the hoopoe lark) and the Cornell Ornithology Lab.“

…Nature itself is wild, indifferent, and accidental; it is a ceaseless pullulation and unfolding, a dense evolutionary plasma of perpetual differentiation and innovation. Each thing, it may be said, changes and arrives in time, yet the posture of externality that permits precise measure and perfect mastery can be struck and assumed only in space…
