Overdrive was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1998 and premiered by the VSO under the baton of Owen Underhill as part of the Vancouver New Music Festival. It is a virtuosic work for orchestra that maintains a high level of activity and energy throughout. The piano is a central focus in the work, with the other instruments of the orchestra weaving melodic lines around the piano or reinforcing the piano pitches and creating colourful resonances. The composition explores the concept of metric modulation in which one tempo glides into a different tempo through shifting accents on different rhythmic subdivisions. In a sense, one hears the music shifting gears to slightly faster or slower tempo, which is where the composition derives its title.
