Sarabande
Rivka Golani had been asked to perform my work, Favour, so often that she began to wonder whether there might be a simpler way to present the work, and to avoid the complicated setup of equipment it required. I suggested that it simply wouldn't be the same work if that were done, and it might be more useful to compose another work, using the same melodic and harmonic material, but combined in a simpler way. In 1993 I composed Sarabande for her, using the same ingredients as the earlier work, and employing a single playback track that the violist could just play against. Ms. Golani gave the premiere performance of Sarabande at London's Wigmore Hall, to a very receptive audience, and favourable critical review. More recently, Liz Reid has become a champion of the work, and has performed it often. A special feature of the composition is the use of the traditional Spanish sarabande rhythm in the first section of the piece. Gradually, more and more of the melodic and harmonic materials from Favour are blended into the flow of the piece, and the work culminates with a similar dramatic glissando. One could think of Favour and Sarabande as companion pieces.

I have been entranced by Caroline Davis's music since the Wonderful Heart Tonic. Then the beautiful Anthems, followed by this swirling masterpiece. Also just picked up Live Work & Play. Caroline Davis is THE jazz musician to watch.
