Sonata 1 for Viola and piano
I composed my first Sonata for Viola and Piano in 2018, after a number of my violist friends convinced me that it was a much needed work. Elizabeth Reid gave the world premiere.
The Sonata is in three movements: I. Introduction (calm, with flowing motion); II. Allegro bizzaro; III. Very hushed and slow – presto molto - coda.
The extensive two-part structure of the final movement has the effect of being, in essence, both a third and fourth movement, combined into one. I also built in a coda at the end, to create a strong sense of closure.
I had been composing many art songs at the time, and, feeling a certain affinity with the viola, I borrowed freely for the viola sonata's thematic material, from some of these songs, especially in the first two movements.

I have been entranced by Caroline Davis's music since the Wonderful Heart Tonic. Then the beautiful Anthems, followed by this swirling masterpiece. Also just picked up Live Work & Play. Caroline Davis is THE jazz musician to watch.
