about

Yarilo – Nikolai Korndorf
Composer Nikolai Korndorf had a lifelong fascination with Slavic folklore. In the tradition of his great musical forebears Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Igor Stravinsky, his piano masterpiece “Yarilo” is a musical depiction of the pagan god of spring, his birth, tumultuous arrival, and gradual fading away with the unfolding of the seasons and the passing of spring into summer.
Dating from 1981 and scored for prepared piano and electronic amplification, “Yarilo” is Korndorf’s musical narrative of the pagan Slavic fertility rite depicting the arrival of spring, and the propitiation of “moist mother earth”. Full of musical onomatopoeia, Korndorf portrays the awakening sounds of nature. For “Yarilo” Korndorf employs a musical economy of means. Tightly organized, logically constructed of small recurrent musical elements on which the composer builds, relentlessly layering one pattern upon another. The work steadily increases in density, dynamics and dissonance. Its near-deafening climax – the peak of a well-crafted musical arch - is a physical release of energy in every sense. Russian spring has arrived.
The extended coda introduces the prepared elements, enhanced through a dialogue with electronic playback. Yarilo ends as quietly as it begins, concluding on the same opening pitches.
